Testing Winter 2016-2017

During the winter months of 2016 to 2017, two manhole cover adapters were installed and monitored on Lafurgey Avenue in Summerside, PE.  Strategic Design partnered with the City of Summerside’s LivingLab and UPEI’s engineering team to design equipment that would be placed in the manholes to measure how the manhole cover adapter would rise and fall with the frost.  This equipment consisted of: data loggers, displacement sensors, thermal couples, moisture meters, temperature monitors, and lithium ion batteries.  One box would be set up in the traditional manhole cover and the second box would be set up in the self-adjusting manhole cover.  These boxes were installed and monitored by Strategic Design’s employees.  Data was sent to UPEI engineers for analysis and the engineers would also conduct site visits where the manhole cover adapters were installed.  Due to minor issues with the testing equipment, some periods of data were missing.  However, with the data that was gathered, conclusive evidence shows that the manhole cover adapter does function the way it was intended.  Data is currently still being processed and gathered from the site.  Pictures taken of the two manholes are shown below.
